I've found you can really only be accepted if you at least attempt to speak Italian and so many people just don't bother or don't try. Take lessons before you go and enrol in an Italian language school when you are there as well. You can take lessons in the morning or in the afternoons in Venice and you'll really find it helpful - even a week's course is better than nothing!
