Well I have said I am writing a series on the Dolomites which is pretty off the beaten track and great if you are a backpacker. It is really the Italian alps which is on the border to Switzerland.

Some good advice there; I stayed in Mestre the first time I visited Venice, and it was definitely much cheaper than staying in Venice proper.

I would, however, recommend staying at least one night on Venice as well, just to get the overall feeling for Venice's atmosphere.
